If you are following or developing a lab protocol or an ordered set of instructions we created Notebook to help with that.
Overview of Notebook Data Model
Within an Organisation, each Project may contain multiple Experiments. Each Experiment follows a single Protocol. This can be changed until Live recording begins, at which point the Protocol becomes uneditable. New versions can be created at any time.
Experiments
Setting up your first Experiment
-
Start by creating a Project.
You must choose a Project name and you can provide a Reference Number if appropriate. Here you can invite specific collaborators and attach files that are associated with the Project. You can also view the Experiments and their status once they have been created. -
Create an Experiment.
You must choose an Experiment name and you can provide a Reference Number if appropriate. You can add an Intro/Aim to explain the purpose of the Experiment. -
Select a Protocol or Create a New one.
Protocols
Protocols are instructions that become fixed once used in an experiment.
Protocol Ingest
Protocols can be imported into Lumi as raw text, or from a .pdf. The ingestion process takes a few minutes. Protocols are composed of Stages > Steps > Actions and Subactions. The first 3 levels are sufficient for human operators with the final level dedicated to Protocol automation and digitisation. The Protocol can be edited and rearranged as desired until you are ready to run it. Once complete you will return to the Experiment page, with the linked Protocol on the left. The Resources window shows the Chemicals, Lab Equipment and Safety Equipment as well as any Additional Consumables mentioned in the Protocol.
Live Experiments
Recording your First Experiment
Once your experiment is linked to a Protocol, click the “Begin Live Experiment Setup”. You will be taken to a Device Selection Page. You can select one or more Devices here to record your work.
You are then ready to proceed through the protocol Stage by Stage, Step by Step and Action by Action.
Voice Commands
You can use the following voice commands within Lumi:
- Hey Lumi, next step
- Hey Lumi, previous step
- Hey Lumi, tick next action
- Hey Lumi, mark step as done
- Hey Lumi, add a note [content] (followed by “stop note”)
Review
Once you have completed an Experiment, you can navigate the video via the Protocol steps or scrolling on the timeline on the Results tab. Comments and Captured Media such as images or video clips are organised in tables on the same tab below the video.
